About Bangladesh Open University

The need for an open university in Bangladesh was felt long ago. The history of distance education in Bangladesh dates back to 1958 when the Department of Education was tasked with distributing 200 radio receivers to educational institutions. This resulted in the creation of an audio-visual cell, which was upgraded to an audio-visual education center in 1982. No further progress was made in distance education till 1971.

After independence, Bangladesh faced the challenge of meeting the educational needs of the people. The need for a new model of education to address this challenge was widely felt. In line with that sentiment, the School Broadcast Pilot Project was launched in 1978. The project was transformed into the National Institute of Educational Media and Technology (NIEMT) in 1983.

Later in 1975, NIEMT was replaced by Bangladesh Distance Education Institute (BIDE). In addition to producing audio-visual materials, BIDE offers distance learning mode (BEAD) programs. The success of the BD encouraged policymakers to adopt a larger plan for establishing an open university. This plan became a reality in October 1992 after the Bangladesh Open University Act 1992 was passed in Parliament.

Bangladesh Open University was born on 20 October 1992 in accordance with the law enacted by the Parliament of Bangladesh. It is a public university. The University Campus has two types of the education system (City Campus, Dhaka) and Outer Campus (Study Center). Bangladesh Open University is committed to building a well-educated and self-reliant country by making the creation, practice, and development of knowledge and science more people-oriented and life-sustaining through the use of multifaceted education technology.

The main campus of Bangladesh Open University is located at Board Bazar in Gazipur district north of Dhaka metropolis. In addition, the university has an extensive network of 12 regional centers, 60 coordinating offices, and more than 1000 tutorial centers across the country for organizing educational activities. The University has seven academic faculties or schools and 11 administrative departments for conducting educational and administrative activities. According to the Bangladesh Open University Act (1992), all the activities of the University are conducted in accordance with the decisions and policies of the Board of Directors, Academic Council, School, Curriculum Committee, Finance Committee, etc.
